The seaside resort of Sharm, as it’s called, is nestled on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula. It’s also called the “City of Peace” for the number of international peace conferences held here. It’s known for its sheltered sandy beaches, clear waters and coral reefs.
What it’s not known for is shade, sitting areas or umbrellas. We walked the boardwalk for miles and it was one resort after another, not a bench or shade tree in sight. Each resort was bigger and more beautiful than the next. Each had a private entrance with a bar and you couldn’t get in without staying in the hotel or paying a fee. These resorts are huge. Can’t begin to imagine what this town would look like if all these resorts were filled. The shops don’t open until sometime after noon, not sure exactly when because we couldn’t stand the heat and hopped a shuttle back to the ship.
We did take a Glass Bottom Boat excursion which took off from the Hotel Hilton Fayrouz at Naama Bay. So we did get onto a beach but only because that’s where the boat was docked. To board the boat we had to walk across a floating bridge with no rails. I knew I was going to end up in the water but decided it was okay because the water was so clear. I actually made it to the boat with the help of a guide. We did get to see a number of fish and beautiful coral. The boat had 2 decks; one for viewing (lower) and one for taking pictures (upper). Sitting on that upper deck was like being in heaven; crystal clear water, shade, drinks and a coastline filled with white resorts.
